Wellington & Martinborough
Arts, culture, fine dining and breathtaking scenery - that's
what Wellington's all about. New Zealand's capital city is
nestled between rolling hills and a stunning harbour and has a
vibrant and compact downtown area that's best explored on foot.
Visit the galleries. Go and see the World-class New
Zealand Symphony Orchestra or the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
Keep an eye out for the public sculptures - there are many
interesting and contemporary pieces around the city - or follow the
Writer's Walk along the waterfront. The city is home to Te
Papa Tongarewa. Te Papa, as it's colloquially known, means
'Our Place' and is the National museum, which tells the story of
New Zealand's history through bold and interractive exhibits.
The city also has a humming nightlife. Known as the
culinary capital, famous for tucked away bars, quirky cafes, award
winning restaurants and really great coffee. Enjoy a
cocktail down one of the alleys, followed by dinner at one of a
number of award-winning restaurants the city boasts.
Head over the nearby Rimutaka Ranges and after a short drive a
haven of gourmet food and wine awaits you in Martinborough and the
Wairarapa region. This is one of New Zealand's top food and
wine destinations, the region is at the heart of the Classic New
Zealand Wine Trail with Martinborough at its centre. With
over 36 wineries nestled around the square in the central boutique
town, it's the place for those with a palate for fine wine, food,
exploring and relaxing. And if its boutique shopping you
want, then look no further than uber-chic Greytown village.
A day visit or an overnight stay is the perfect complement to
your visit to Wellington.
